o come o come: a variation on Emmanuel

across the ocean blue and yellow flags scrape the sky in search of  peace

O come, O come, Emmanuel

across town a child, hungry, weeps

And ransom captive Israel

asleep on streets and under bridges
in hospice rooms and hermetic kitchens

That mourns in lonely exile here

silver bells ring empty

Until the Son of God appear

change clangs against cold red buckets

Rejoice!

and then

Rejoice!

an arm embraces

Emmanuel

a hand reaches

Shall come to thee

a breath speaks hope

O Israel

*****

waiting

    1. Sandy–I know, I DID say that! Well, I caved and couldn’t resist. I suppose that’s a good sign, that I can’t stay away from writing. My biggest fear is always that my brain will quit working and run dry…better use it while it works, right? Thanks so much for visiting and reading! xo
