why a child? an advent poem.

*****

still we wonder
groping
as we wander
through broken ideals
hiding
deeper behind hearts
tightly
woven shrouds of doubt and

fear

deciphering eschatology
teetering on theology
expecting enormous answers

when all He really wants
is for us to
crouch
to bend and break and shrink our
selves
until like
He
did we
burst
into life with wild eyed wonder
and
shiver
beneath the amniotic moistness and
bleat
against stiff lungs burning and straining
and
begin the cowering
that is
required
to find

FREEDOM.

*****

“Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on death and freed all who cower through life…” (Hebrews 2:14, 15 MSG)
