If He came today.

if he came today I think he’d be
forgotten and forgetful (of our sins, anyway),
tucked away in a corner
a lukewarm tray of food his
and his tissue-thin skin swaddled
by a bleach stiffened blanket.
he fiddles with a red letter version of
The Word
left by a Gideon
and his rheumy eyes
watch through a frosty window
as package-laden SUVs
home with their treasures.

  1. some years back friends invited us along to an old-folks home Christmas day. while the friends had called weeks ahead and bought gifts special to each resident, we were late and took things like oranges and crackers and candy. we sang in each lonely room, tears streaming all over the place.
